Why Undelete Software Can Help

Deleted files don’t truly disappear until they’re overwritten. Most operating systems (OS), like Windows, macOS, and iOS, simply remove the reference to those files. That’s why undelete programs like Disk Drill can scan and recover data from the storage device, even after the Recycle Bin or Trash has been emptied. The tool includes many features that make it a great choice in undelete software.

Were your files lost from an internal Windows or Mac SSD? If so, you need to act fast due to the presence of TRIM. To successfully recover deleted files from an SSD, we highly recommend connecting it to another computer as an external storage device or creating a byte-to-byte copy as soon as possible.

How to Use Undelete Freeware

Here are some steps that will guide you through how to undelete files.

1. Download and install Disk Drill

Start by downloading and installing Disk Drill for Windows or Mac. The free version allows you to scan and preview all recoverable files. On the Windows version, you can also undelete a limited number of files for free. Avoid installing Disk Drill on the same drive that suffered from data loss, as it could corrupt the data.

Download and Install Disk Drill

2. Launch the software and select the recovery target

Open Disk Drill. Once the program starts, select the device that will be recovered from the list displayed by the app. If it’s an external device, connect it now, then select it. You can choose to scan only a partition instead, but scanning the entire device is best for uncovering everything possible.

Launch the software and select the recovery target

3. Scan for deleted items

Click the Search for lost data button to start scanning the selected device for deleted files and folders. If scanning an external device, non-system internal drive, or byte-to-byte image, you will also need to choose between the standard Universal Scan, which searches for all files, or Advanced Camera Recovery, specifically for the recovery of unedited videos shot by cameras or drones. Scans can be paused and resumed at any time for more convenient data recovery.

4. Preview and select the recoverable files

Once the scan completes, you’ll be left with a long list of files available for recovery. You can go through and preview these files one by one as they are, or use the filters to refine the results by file format, file size, date modified, and recovery chances. The file's preview capability is the strongest indication that it can be restored without issue. Select the items you want to recover by the checkbox next to each file. If you simply want to recover everything, don’t select any files and click Recover all at the bottom right of the window.

5. Undelete the files

Click the Recover button, and then choose a new storage location on a separate device to restore the selected files. Once the files are recovered, you will have the option to view them.

A Free Additional Data Protection Tool

Disk Drill includes the free Recovery Vault feature that is designed to be another layer of protection for your data. It runs in the background, capturing the metadata of deleted files. As soon as files are deleted, Recovery Vault records their metadata and keeps it until recovery is needed, significantly increasing your chances of recovery. Granted, this isn’t the actual file contents, but the file name and location instead. Undeleting files takes only a few moments, your chances of recovery are much better, and best of all, it’s completely free.

Frequently Asked Questions

by Disk Drill Team

How to undelete files in Windows?

To undelete files in Windows, start by checking the Recycle Bin to see if deleted files are there. Not there? The next step is to check any backups for a copy of the data. If no backup exists, then your only option is to use data recovery software to scan the drive and undelete the files.

Can I recover permanently deleted files for free?

Yes, you can. If you’re sure that the files have been permanently deleted, Disk Drill for Windows offers a free trial version of the software where you can recover some of your data for free before making any investment in the Pro version. You can see alternative options in our list of the top 5 data recovery software.

How to undelete files without software?

There are several methods of undeleting file on Windows without software. Start by checking the place where deleted files go. Recycle Bin on Windows, Trash on macOS, and on Android and iOS you can check the Recently Deleted folders in your Photos and Files apps. As part of your search, you should also show hidden files to confirm the files haven’t been hidden by mistake or malware. Your final option is to check any backups made by native backup solutions, like File History for Windows and Time Machine for macOS, as well as preinstalled cloud storage like OneDrive and iCloud.

How to undelete files from an SD card?

Undeleting files from an SD card can be tricky without software. SD cards use the FAT file system (FAT32, exFAT), which does not include Trash-like functionality. Your files are automatically permanently deleted instead. As such, you will need to use data recovery software, like Disk Drill, to scan and recover the data. If we’re talking about the recovery of deleted videos from cameras and drones, the Advanced Camera Recovery module of Disk Drill is best suited.

Can Disk Drill recover files after secure deletion or if they were overwritten?

Your chances of recovering files after secure deletion or overwriting are extremely slim, almost impossible. Although scanning with Disk Drill won’t hurt, you should expect that data to be unrecoverable. Once new data has overwritten the old data that was stored at the same location, there’s virtually nothing that can be recovered.

What if the data recovery software did not find the deleted files?

You should first make sure you’re using all possible scan types. Using different algorithms will produce different results, and you should use an all-in-one scan for the best coverage. However, if the deleted files cannot be found, it may be too late. At the end of the day, data recovery software can only do so much.
