They\u2019re specialized image files that store scanned documents. They are especially well suited for storing image files with combinations of photographs, text, color images, and line drawings.<\/p>\r\n<p>On this page, we\u2019ll explain in more detail what DjVu files are. DjVu files split such documents into three layers: the foreground, the background, and a black-and-white mask. They hold all this information with minimal use of space, making them great for online use.<\/p>\r\n<p>DjVu files have the extension .djvu or .djv.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"alert alert-success\" role=\"alert\">They are commonly used for <b>eBooks<\/b>, <b>newspapers<\/b>, <b>manuals<\/b>, and <b>digital reproductions<\/b> of old documents. Basically, they are used for the same purposes that PDF files are used and are even frequently touted as being superior to PDFs. In the next section, we\u2019ll explore that claim.<\/div>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_open_djvu_files_on_mac_and_windows\"><\/span>How to Open DjVu Files on Mac and Windows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>Unless you\u2019re using Linux, your operating system likely didn\u2019t come with a DjVu reader. There are plenty of programs that open DjVu files, though, and many are free.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Sumatra PDF<\/b>: This free, open-source document viewer supports DjVu as well as PDF, EPUB, and MOBI eBook filetypes, Comic Book Archive files, and many others. It\u2019s only available for Windows.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Okular<\/b>: This viewer was developed by an international community of free software developers known as KDE. It\u2019s a cross-platform software that works on Windows, Mac operating systems, and Android.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>DjVu Browser Plug-in<\/b>: This free, open-sourced plug-in allows you to open and view DjVu files in your browser. It works for both Windows and Safari.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>MacDjView<\/b>: Available for Mac, as the name applies, the MacDjView allows you to open view DjVu files with continuous scrolling. It\u2019s completely free to download.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>WinDjView<\/b>: This free DjVu viewer offers continuous scrolling, a tabbed interface, and advanced printing options. It\u2019s only for Windows, but it has a Mac counterpart (noted below).<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>MacDjView<\/b>: This is the Mac version of the WinDjView application noted above.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Canvas X<\/b>: Created by Canvas GFX, this computer program is used for digital drawing, publishing, and imaging. It\u2019s not free, but it is a much more advanced solution than most of the others listed above.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>You could convert DjVu files to something more common, such as PDF. There are many such software options to select from.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_recover_deleted_djvu_files\"><\/span>How to Recover Deleted DjVu Files<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>You can usually get back missing DjVu files that have been accidentally deleted or lost through corruption. The reason you can restore such files is that files never really disappear, not even after they\u2019ve been deleted. They are just transferred into a different stage of storage that allows them to be written over with new data. Until they are so overwritten that the original information is completely buried, though, you can still retrieve the missing files.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\">But if you forgot to save them, the files might indeed be lost forever. Unsaved files are usually irretrievable, but in most other cases that isn\u2019t the case.\u00a0<\/div>\r\n<p>Often, the files can be recovered from a <b>Windows Recycle Bin<\/b> or <b>Mac Trash<\/b> with just two clicks of the mouse. Other times you may need to use a data recovery center or data recovery software. No matter what, you can usually recover those files.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_recover_djvu_files_with_software\"><\/span>How to Recover DjVu Files with Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"\/howto\/top-5-data-recovery-software-windows.html\">Data recovery software<\/a> does the same thing as a data recovery center but for free and from anywhere. <a href=\"\/\">Disk Drill<\/a> is the option that we prefer and the one that we\u2019ll explore in this section. Usually, that means double-clicking on it. In the center of your screen, you\u2019ll see a list under the heading <b>Device\/Disk<\/b>. The <b>All recovery methods<\/b> button directs the <b>Search for lost data button<\/b> on how to look for files. The initial stage after deletion is simply moving the files to the temporary storage of a <b>Windows Recycle Bin<\/b> or<b> Mac Trash<\/b>. Depending on your settings, your system may dump those files after a certain amount of time, but within that frame, the files are easy to get back.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"recovering_files_from_mac_trash\"><\/span>Recovering Files from Mac Trash<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Find <b>Mac Trash<\/b> and open it.\u00a0It looks like a garbage can and is usually on your desktop.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Within the Trash, <b>Control+click<\/b> or <b>right-click<\/b> on the file you want to recover. A drop-down menu will appear. It allows you to quickly access files you\u2019ve recently worked on. It also allows you to restore previous versions of those files.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>To see <b>Recent files<\/b>, launch <b>File Explorer<\/b>. You\u2019ll see your list of recent files in the center pane. You can also initiate your run dialogue by pressing <b>Windows + R<\/b>. They achieve this speed by opening at a lower quality and then improving resolution over time.<\/p>\r\n<p>This may become significant when you start dealing with large numbers of files.
