Safe mode OS X was designed for troubleshooting purposes.<\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full\" src=\"\/howto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/mac-safe-mode.jpg\" alt=\"mac safe mode\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"mac_safe_mode_start_up\"><\/span><b>Mac Safe Mode Start Up<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Mac OS X safe mode performs certain checks, such as verifying the startup disk, repairing directory problems, and loading the necessary kernel extensions. In addition, Mac safe mode prevents Startup items and login items from opening automatically. OS X safe mode also disables user installed fonts.<\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"how_to_start_mac_in_safe_mode\"><\/span><b>How To Start Mac In Safe Mode<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Booting Mac in safe mode can be done in a few easy steps:<\/p>\r\n<p><b>a) Using the Keyboard<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>if the computer is on, shut it down, and wait ten seconds.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>power on the computer.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>press the SHIFT key after you hear the startup tone, but not before it.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>(If you use OS X\u2019s FileVault): release the key when the computer prompts you to unlock the key. Type the password and press ENTER.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>release the SHIFT key when the login screen appears.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>Don\u2019t worry if it takes longer than usual. Boot Mac in safe mode performs several checks, which requires time.<\/p>\r\n<p>These steps apply to Mac operating system in its Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan versions.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>b) Using The Terminal<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>open a terminal from the Utilities menu.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>type <i>sudo nvram boot \u2013arg=\u201d-x\u201d<\/i> and press ENTER. Or in verbose mode type <i>sudo nvram boot \u2013arg=\u201d-x -v\u201d<\/i> and press ENTER.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>enter your password after the prompt.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>the computer will reboot in safe mode. The login screen will appear. Enter your username and password.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"knowing_if_you_are_in_safe_mode\"><\/span><b>Knowing If You Are In Safe Mode<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>There are three ways to find out if safe mode OS X is on:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>The words Safe Mode will appear in red in the menu bar.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Performance will be slower. This is because many features are not available in safe mode. For example, graphics will use the default drives, and they won\u2019t be accelerated.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Boot mode in the System Information window displays Safe. Otherwise, it will show\u00a0Normal.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"leaving_mac_safe_mode\"><\/span><b>Leaving Mac Safe Mode<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Restart the computer without holding any key.
