Recovery software can scan that storage directly and rebuild the video files, even when the recorder itself thinks the footage is gone.<\/p>\r\n<p>Deleted CCTV footage recovery is not guaranteed, though, and it is worth being honest about why. Almost every CCTV system records in a continuous loop. When the drive or reserved disk quota reaches full capacity, the recorder overwrites the oldest video to make room for the newest. That means the clock is working against you. The DVR, NVR, camera card, or recording drive is the only place the video ever existed, which makes scanning that storage device the most practical option you have.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"\/data-recovery-software.html\">Disk Drill<\/a> is the tool we recommend here. In a lot of setups, a second, intact copy is sitting somewhere outside the original DVR, NVR, hard drive, SSD, or memory card, waiting for someone to look for it.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"alert alert-warning\" role=\"alert\">The catch is that all three methods below depend on something the system already did. A backup, a cloud upload, an export, or a second recording location has to have existed before the footage disappeared. You cannot create a backup of a video that is already gone, so if none of these were set up in advance, the software route above is your path.<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"title_sc_bg\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"method_1_restore_the_footage_from_a_local_backup\"><\/span><span class=\"title_shortcode_bg\">Method 1.<\/span> Restore the Footage From a Local Backup<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>A local backup means one of two things. It might be an automatic copy your CCTV system was configured to create, or it might be footage that someone exported by hand at some point, perhaps for a previous incident. Either way, it could be sitting on a device nobody thinks of as part of the security system.<\/p>\r\n<p>Check the most likely places first:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>USB drives and external hard drives that have been connected to the DVR or NVR<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Downloads, Videos, Desktop, and Documents folders on the computer used to review the cameras<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Export or backup folders created by the CCTV software itself<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Shared folders on a local server or an office computer<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Wherever footage was saved for a previous incident, insurance claim, or police report<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>The fastest way to search a Windows computer is File Explorer. Open it, select the drive or folder you want to check, and use the search box in the top right. On a Mac, the same search works through Finder. However, you shouldn\u2019t just search for ordinary video files, since some CCTV systems use a proprietary format. It saves your camera settings, schedules, and network details so the system can be rebuilt after a fault. It doesn\u2019t normally contain a single frame of recorded footage.<\/div>\r\n<h3 class=\"title_sc_bg\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"method_2_check_the_cctv_cloud_account\"><\/span><span class=\"title_shortcode_bg\">Method 2.<\/span> <span id=\"check-cloud-account\">Check the CCTV Cloud Account<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p>Many modern security cameras upload recordings to the manufacturer\u2019s cloud service, either alongside local storage or instead of it. If yours is one of them, an intact clip may still be waiting in the provider\u2019s app or web portal even though the DVR, NVR, or camera card has lost it.<\/p>\r\n<p>This only works if cloud recording was already switched on before the footage disappeared. This is worth checking carefully rather than assuming, because a camera being paired to a phone app does not mean anything was ever uploaded.
