After that, move through the relevant fixes from the table. If the drive doesn\u2019t show up anywhere, especially after you test it on another computer, don\u2019t keep forcing it. At that point, a data recovery center<\/a> may be the only realistic option.<\/p>\r\n

<\/span>How to Recover Data from a USB Flash Drive That\u2019s Not Recognized<\/span><\/h2>\r\n

Before we get into data recovery, let\u2019s separate two very different cases.<\/p>\r\n

If your USB flash drive is physically damaged to the point where your computer doesn\u2019t detect it even in Disk Management, there isn\u2019t a practical DIY recovery path here. If the data on that drive is important, your safest option is a professional recovery lab<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

But before you assume there\u2019s no DIY path, try the basic checks from Method 1<\/a>. Sometimes the problem isn\u2019t the USB drive itself, but something between the drive and your computer: dust in the port, a weak front-panel USB connection, a bad hub, a port that doesn\u2019t provide stable power.<\/div>\r\n

But if the USB drive is detected (even with all kinds of problems we covered in the previous section) you have a chance to recover the files yourself – you\u2019ll need a special type of software: a USB data recovery tool<\/a>. These tools can scan drives, even if Windows can\u2019t normally recognize them.<\/p>\r\n

Disk Drill is our go-to recovery solution when dealing with unreadable, or not recognized broken USB drives. It\u2019s designed to work directly with the drive, meaning it can scan it when it\u2019s corrupted, RAW, or constantly displaying error messages or requesting you to format. The same is true if it\u2019s not appearing in most places, like File Explorer. Basically, as long as the USB drive is showing in Disk Management with the correct size, it will be scannable.<\/p>\r\n

⚠️ Windows may prompt you to format your drive to repair the damage. Avoid doing this. Instead, simply close the message.<\/div>\r\n

Considering we\u2019re working with a broken USB drive, the unstable state that it\u2019s in could worsen at any time. We recommend creating a backup of the drive and scanning that instead. Disk Drill includes a byte-to-byte backup feature<\/a>, but you can use any other tool as well.<\/p>\r\n

Here\u2019s how you create a backup of your broken USB drive with Disk Drill, then scan it for recoverable data:<\/p>\r\n

  7. Return to Storage Devices.<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t
  8. At the bottom of the screen, find the text that says Attach disk image<\/b> and click it.\"Click<\/li>\r\n\t
  9. Select the image of your USB drive, then click Search for lost data<\/b>. (When Disk Drill asks which scan type to use, select Universal Scan<\/b>.)\"Universal\r\n
    ✅ If your USB drive has lost a partition, Disk Drill will identify it during the scan and allow you to search it for data.<\/div>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
  10. Click Review found items<\/b>. You can also click on one of the colored file type icons to filter the results or recover everything at once by clicking Recover all<\/b>.\"ReviewPreview and select the files you wish to recover.\"Preview Preview is the easiest way to understand what you\u2019re looking at, and it\u2019s also one of the best signs that the data survived. Disk Drill looks for data that is still physically present on the flash drive, including files you may have deleted yourself some time ago. Treat this screen as a second chance. You may find the files you came for, plus a few older ones you forgot you needed.<\/li>\r\n\t
  11. Once you\u2019ve checked the files you need, click Recover<\/b>.<\/li>\r\n\t
  12. Choose where you want to store the recovered files.\"Completing You should choose a location on a separate physical drive to avoid corrupting the data. Click Next<\/b> to complete the recovery process.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n
