Undelete Files using the File History Option<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>The Recycle Bin is not the only option built into Windows 8 that can be used to get back deleted files \u2013 there is also a useful feature called File History (which replaces the &#8220;Previous versions&#8221; feature found in earlier versions of Windows.<\/p>\r\n<p>While not exactly infallible (and it will only work if you had the feature manually enabled), it offers you a second chance to recover files you have deleted or those that you have forgotten to save.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>To use File History to recover deleted files on Windows 8:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Click the Start button, type <b>File History,<\/b> and then click the search result labeled <b>Restore your files with File History.<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t<li>In the search box, type the name of a file you would like to recover.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>When you have located the file you are interested in, use the left and right arrows to browse through the available versions of the file in question.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>To restore the file to its original location, select it and then click <b>Restore<\/b>. It is something of a shame that in order to get the most from this useful tool, it is reliant on you have made the choice to use it ahead of time.<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Make sure that you have some form of external driver connected, be it a USB drive or an external hard drive.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Click the Start button, type <b>File History<\/b> and then click the search result labelled <b>File History settings<\/b>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Move the <b>File History<\/b> toggle to the <b>On<\/b> position. In future, you will be able to use the previous instructions to recover files.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"method_3_recover_deleted_files_using_a_third-party_software\"><\/span>Method 3. Recover Deleted Files using a Third-Party Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>While Windows 8 includes various safety nets that can help you to recover data, they will not work in all circumstances. The chances are that if you are reading this article, you find yourself in a situation where you are simply not able to get to the files you need.<\/p>\r\n<p>Should you find yourself unable to restore files using the method outlined above, <a href=\"\/data-recovery-software.html\">data recovery software<\/a> may well be able to help. One tool that does this very well is Disk Drill. The free version of the program lets you recover up to 500MB of data.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>Steps to recover files on Windows 8 using Disk Drill:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Step 1:<\/b> Install and launch Disk Drill, and then move to the <b>Data Recover<\/b>y section.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>Step 2:<\/b> In the center of the program window, under the <b>Device\/Disk<\/b> heading, you will see a list of all of the drives connected to your computer. This list includes all of your internal and external drives, so you may see several entries here. This process should not take too long, but just how long it takes will vary depending on the size of the drive being scanned, the amount of data involved, and the speed of your computer. To perform a deeper analysis of your drive, click the <b>Scan entire disk<\/b> link in the box labeled <b>There&#8217;s a chance to find more data<\/b> \u2013 you will only see this option if you initially opted to scan a partition rather than a drive.<\/p>\r\n<p><b>Step 5:<\/b> If you would like to simply recover all of the data that has been found, click the <b>Recover all<\/b> button and then choose where you would like to save the files to.
