One of these is <b>Microsoft\u2019s BitLocker<\/b>.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_is_bitlocker\"><\/span>What is BitLocker?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><img class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26621\" style=\"border: 1px solid gray;\" src=\"\/howto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Reset-BitLocker-Password-Drive-Icon.png\" alt=\"bitlocker encrypted drive\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\" \/>BitLocker is a proprietary <b>encryption program<\/b> offered by Microsoft on some of its versions of the Windows operating system. It is available to users with:<\/p>\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-image: url('\/howto\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Dot-For-List.png');\">\r\n\t<li>The Ultimate and Enterprise editions of <b>Windows Vista<\/b> and <b>Windows 7<\/b>;<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Pro and Enterprise editions of <b>Windows 8<\/b> and <b>8.1<\/b>;<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of <b>Windows 10<\/b> installed on their computer.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 20px; border-left: 3px solid #1fe06c;\">It is <b>easy to use<\/b> and can <b>encrypt<\/b> your hard drive and <b>protect<\/b> against malware attacking your system\u2019s firmware or attempting to make other unauthorized changes without a noticeable slowdown.<\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"bitlocker_system_requirements\"><\/span>BitLocker System Requirements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p>In addition to running one of the support flavors of the Windows OS, there are some other system requirements which need to be fulfilled in order to run BitLocker. You are required to have a drive with at least two partitions as well as a special chip known as <b>Trusted Platform Module (TPM)<\/b>. The TPM\u2019s role is to run authentication checks against your system\u2019s software, hardware, and firmware. You need to select whether you intend to <b>enter the password<\/b> manually or by storing it on a USB key. Using the key method poses the risk that the <b>USB key can be lost<\/b>, leaving you unable to authenticate when booting your computer.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"alert alert-secondary\" role=\"alert\">\r\n<p>You also need to <b>save a recovery key<\/b> to protect against issues you may encounter when unlocking your computer. You have several options for saving the key, and you can use as many of them as you wish. It is probably a good idea to use at least two of them. Saving the key to your <b>Microsoft account<\/b> will let you unlock and decrypt your files if you lose the flash drive or the paper on which it was printed. It also poses the risk of someone accessing your Microsoft account and gaining access to the key and thereby your hard drive. One such tool is <a href=\"\/data-recovery-software.html\"><b>Disk Drill for Windows<\/b><\/a>. Version 4 of this app <b>can access files<\/b> in the BitLocker containers and assist in recovering data from an encrypted drive.
