If so, connect it to your Mac and insert the SD card again. You can also open Disk Utility and check whether the SD card appears in the sidebar. If it does (even if it\u2019s grayed out) your Mac can still detect the card, which means the card reader is working.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have another reader, then you can ask a friend to let you use their laptop for a while and use its built-in memory card reader instead.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_check_for_usb_and_other_connection_issues\"><\/span>4. Check for USB and Other Connection Issues<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Memory card readers transfer data via USB, or Universal Serial Bus, which is a data interface that enables communication between devices (readers, USB flash drives, external drives) and a host controller (your computer).<\/p>\n<p>Controlling this interface on macOS is the so-called USB daemon, a background process responsible for device mounting, configuration management, and all other aspects of transferring data via USB. If this daemon stops working correctly, it\u2019s very likely that your Mac won\u2019t be able to recognize your SD card.<\/p>\n<p>There are some ways to restart the USB daemon manually through Terminal, but we don\u2019t recommend that route for most users. It can interrupt other connected devices and may create extra complications if the command is used incorrectly. A simple Mac restart achieves a similar reset in a safe way.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_check_if_sd_card_is_locked\"><\/span>5. Check if SD Card Is Locked<b><br \/>\n<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/sd-card-lock.png\" alt=\"mac doesn't recognize sd card\" width=\"227\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16373 size-full colorbox-9037\" \/>Many guides recommend checking the Lock switch when an SD card isn\u2019t reading or recognized on a Mac. It might be worth a quick look, but based on our tests, the Lock switch usually isn\u2019t connected to this specific problem.<\/p>\n<p>The Lock switch on a full-size SD card is designed to prevent write operations. In other words, it can stop you from deleting files, modifying files, saving new data to the card. But it shouldn\u2019t prevent your Mac from reading the card or detecting it in Disk Utility.<\/p>\n<p>So if the SD card doesn\u2019t show up at all, the cause is probably something else, such as the card reader, USB connection, or file system corruption.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_insert_the_sd_card_into_a_different_device\"><\/span>6. Insert the SD Card into a Different Device<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of the best ways to determine why you can\u2019t access your SD card is to insert it into a different device. Try another Mac, a Windows PC, or a device with a built-in SD card slot. If the card works there, the issue is probably not the card itself.<\/p>\n<p>If another device detects the card, copy the important files from it right away. Don\u2019t use that device to format or \u201cfix\u201d the card unless you already recovered the data you need first.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_format_the_card\"><\/span>7. Format the Card<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If your SD card now appears in Disk Utility, but you still can\u2019t access it in Finder, formatting may help make it usable again. This usually applies to cases where the card has a corrupted file system, appears as RAW, or uses a file system macOS can\u2019t mount.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-warning\" role=\"alert\"><b>NOTE<\/b>: This will erase all data on it! If you have important files on that card, make sure to attempt a <a href=\"#recovery\">recovery process<\/a> first before proceeding with these steps. Otherwise, you\u2019re permanently going to lose all data on the card. However, if you\u2019re not able to access the SD card with data recovery software, you won\u2019t be able to get your files back.<\/div>\n<p><b>To format your SD card, follow these steps:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Disk Utility<\/li>\n<li>Select your SD card from the list<\/li>\n<li>Click on Erase<\/li>\n<li>Give the card a name if you want to \u2013 this is not required<\/li>\n<li>Choose exFAT for the file system format if the card is larger than 64 GB, otherwise choose FAT32<\/li>\n<li>Click Erase<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once the process is finished, you should have a freshly formatted SD card with no data on it.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_use_a_professional_data_recovery_service\"><\/span>9. Use a Professional Data Recovery Service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes you\u2019re simply not able to recover a malfunctioning SD card yourself no matter what you do. If your card has a damaged controller, worn-out memory chip, cracked body, bent contacts, or serious electrical failure, there\u2019s not much most people can do at home.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, using a professional data recovery service might be your only option. These companies work in specialized facilities with advanced equipment that allows them to access malfunctioning storage devices and recover data from them when everything else fails.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that this option has some downsides. It takes a long time \u2013 usually a couple of weeks \u2013 and it can cost quite a bit of money. You might also not be comfortable with sending your data to a company that will be able to access it.<\/p>\n<p>If your data is important enough and you want to try this, you can start with a company like <a href=\"\/data-recovery-center.html\">Cleverfiles Data Recovery Center<\/a>.
