Even if you could read raw sectors, you\u2019d mostly see <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ciphertext\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">ciphertext<\/a>. That\u2019s by design. <\/p>\n<p>Apple also restricts host\u2011computer access to the device to backup\/management protocols (Finder on macOS, Apple Devices app\/<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/detail\/9pb2mz1zmb1s?hl=en-gb\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">iTunes on Windows<\/a>), not to the storage volume itself. That\u2019s why traditional file\u2011system scans aren\u2019t an option.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\">&#x1f449; <b>iOS never provides block level access<\/b> to third\u2011party apps or to a connected Mac\/PC. There\u2019s no raw \u201cdisk\u201d interface to scan, and all data at rest is protected by file\u2011based, hardware\u2011backed encryption (Data Protection), making sector\u2011level carving meaningless without keys.<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"so%e2%80%a6_why_are_quick_and_deep_scan_missing_on_ios\"><\/span><b>So\u2026 Why Are Quick and Deep Scan Missing on iOS?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>No block device<\/b>: iOS doesn\u2019t present a raw volume to scan; it exposes only backup interfaces. Deep\/Quick scans need block\u2011level or file\u2011system\u2011level access.<\/li>\n<li><b>Strong encryption at rest<\/b>: Without the device\u2019s hardware\u2011bound keys and authentication state, sector data is unreadable ciphertext, so signature carving won\u2019t yield usable files.<\/li>\n<li><b>Different data source<\/b>: iOS recovery is backup\u2011centric, not disk\u2011centric, so Disk Drill reads structured databases rather than free space. Hence the different grouping and limited artifact set.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what_data_types_can_disk_drill_usually_recover_from_ios\"><\/span><b>What Data Types Can Disk Drill Usually Recover From iOS?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Disk Drill targets specific, high\u2011value categories commonly stored in backups\u2014such as Contacts, Chats, Photos, etc.\u2014and displays them by type. Availability depends on the iOS version, whether the backup is encrypted, and what the user originally backed up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\">\n&#x1f4a1; <b>Note<\/b>: For iOS 13+, Call History (and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT205220\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external\">other sensitive data<\/a>) appears only when the backup is encrypted. If you need call logs, enable \u201cEncrypt local backup\u201d and keep that password safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#x1f914; <b>Why encrypt iOS backups to recover the most data?<\/b><br \/>\nStarting with iOS 13, Apple restricts several sensitive data types to encrypted backups only. If a local backup isn\u2019t encrypted, recovery tools can\u2019t acquire or parse key items like Call History, Safari Browsing History, and Safari Open Tabs. Encrypted backups also include data that unencrypted ones omit\u2014such as saved passwords (Keychain), Wi\u2011Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history\u2014which are often essential for a complete recovery. (Face ID, Touch ID, and your device passcode are not included in any backup.)<\/p>\n<p>To recover the fullest set of iPhone\/iPad data\u2014including call logs and Safari data\u2014you need an encrypted backup. Go to Applications \u2192 Utilities \u2192 Keychain Access (or press Command\u2013Space and search for Keychain Access).<\/li>\n<li><b>Search for \u201ciPhone Backup\u201d<\/b>. In the upper\u2011right search field, type iPhone Backup. (On some Macs you might see items like iOS Backup or similar\u2014open the one that matches your device\/most recent date.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Open the item and show the password<\/b>. Double\u2011click the iPhone Backup entry to open it. In the Attributes tab, check Show password.<\/li>\n<li><b>Authenticate<\/b>. Enter the password for your login keychain (the same password you use to sign in to your Mac). If prompted, you can use Touch ID.<\/li>\n<li><b>Copy your backup password<\/b>. The field will reveal your encrypted backup password. You\u2019ll see categories like Chats and Images instead of the original folder trees from the device. That\u2019s expected behavior for logical iOS acquisition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\" role=\"alert\">\n&#x1f4a1; <b>Tip: Make sure you have enough free disk space before scanning a phone<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Phone storage is often larger than the free space on your computer. To complete a data\u2011recovery scan in Disk Drill, plan for at least 2\u00d7 the amount of data currently stored on the phone. If your Workspace Folder is on the system drive, add an extra 5 GB of free space.<\/p>\n<p><b>Example<\/b>: If your phone has 100 GB in use, ensure 205 GB free on the system drive.
