This file will allow you to load the scan and perform data recovery at any convenient time without having to re-scan the drive or device again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-info\"><img src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/session-icon-disk-drill-4-mac.png\" alt=\"Disk Drill session file\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16148 colorbox-11681\" \/><b>.ddscan<\/b> is a proprietary format that Disk Drill uses to store the information related to one&#8217;s recovery scan progress. These files are meant to be opened with Disk Drill recovery software in order to resume the scanning session or assess the results of a specific scan in the past.<\/div>\n<p>These recovery sessions can be loaded into Disk Drill if you want to continue file retrieval from where you stopped. It&#8217;s not recommended to resume saved sessions in case the data on the storage device could&#8217;ve been altered after the initial scan. In such cases, please consider starting a new scan. Also, the general recommendation is always to recover your data as soon as you can, try avoiding any unnecessary delays; we hope you won&#8217;t need to use the recovery sessions feature explained in this article.<\/p>\n<div class=\"alert alert-warning\">&#x26a0;&#xfe0f; <b>Remember<\/b>: Due to <a href=\"\/help\/variables-that-impact-file-recovery-chances\/\">various complexities of data recovery<\/a>, the longer you wait, the lower your chances are for successful file restoration.<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"creating_a_recovery_session_file\"><\/span><b>Creating a recovery session file<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Disk Drill saves recovery sessions in files that can be imported back in order to continue past scans from where you stopped. As mentioned above, the saved scans will have <b>.ddscan<\/b> extension when viewed in Finder.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how a recovery session can be saved for later:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Disk Drill and start a new scan.<\/li>\n<li>Pause the scan using the &#8220;<b>Pause<\/b>&#8221; button at the top of the Disk Drill window.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the &#8220;<b>File<\/b>&#8221; menu and select &#8220;<b>Save session as&#8230;<\/b>&#8220;. That is where your <b>.ddscan<\/b> file will be stored.<\/li>\n<li>Done! You have saved the session. It can now be loaded into Disk Drill and resumed at any time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"resuming_the_latest_scan\"><\/span><b>Resuming the latest scan<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s no need to manually save your scan session, unless you have to. Disk Drill will automatically create a resumable one either after the scan, or during a scan, depending on its duration. Also, Disk Drill has a way to easily <b>Resume<\/b> a previous scan.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Disk Drill.<\/li>\n<li>Select the device you were scanning before.<\/li>\n<li>In the bottom-right corner, above the &#8220;<b>Search for lost data<\/b>&#8221; button, locate the text saying <kbd>\"Last scanned: x hours\/minutes ago\"<\/kbd> and click it. You can quickly resume any of the last several scans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"loading_saved_scans_into_disk_drill\"><\/span><b>Loading saved scans into Disk Drill<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you have a saved session file, it is easy to load it into Disk Drill and continue the scan or recover the files based on the scan data. Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Disk Drill.<\/li>\n<li>Go to &#8220;<b>File<\/b>&#8221; menu and select <b>&#8220;Open recovery session&#8221;<\/b>. Or use the <kbd>Command+O<\/kbd> keyboard shortcut to do that.<img src=\"\/help\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/disk-drill-open-session-file.jpg\" alt=\"disk drill open saved recovery session\" style=\"border-radius: 6px; border: 1px solid gray;\" width=\"466\" height=\"530\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16177 colorbox-11681\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the .ddscan file in the pop-up file menu.<\/li>\n<li>Press the <b>&#8220;Load&#8221;<\/b> button after selecting the .ddscan file.<\/li>\n<li>Give Disk Drill a minute to load the data from the file.<\/li>\n<li>Press <b>&#8220;Continue&#8221;<\/b> to resume scanning.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"alert alert-warning\">&#x26a0;&#xfe0f; The .ddscan files created by Disk Drill should not be modified before being loaded again. Doing so can invalidate the scan results and lead to unexpected results.
