I have a Macbook Pro from 2010 which I recently updated to OS 10.9

For few days, the computer was running slow, and last night it was slower
and after waiting for about 15 minutes for scrolling wheel, i powered off my
    computer.

The following morning the machine would not boot up. After few minutes of
thinking (spinning wheel), the Disk Utility application was launched.
I tried both verify disk and repair disk and both failed.
I was able to launch the Terminal window, and could cd to /Volumes/Applications
but could not cd to /Volumes/Users/shalab — it fails with Input/Output error.
My friend took the internal drive and attached to his machine, and tried to cd to /Volumes/Users/shalab folder and he got additional information that .hotfilebtree file had InputOutput error.

Can Disk Drill help? I am not able to connect this macbook to internet either.

Yes, Disk Drill can help. You should try it, it’s the only way to prove that your data is recoverable. Every recovery case is unique, and only running Disk Drill can confirm our assumptions.
